How To Prepare For 2012

Emergency Foods

Freeze dried foods make the best emergency foods. They taste good, preserve their freshness and last a long time. You should have enough emergency food and water to last you and your family for at least 2 weeks.

Emergency Food In The Home

Emergency food supplies in your home should be sufficient to last two weeks (minimum). Your food should include a variety of prepared emergency foods, meals ready to eat (MRE), canned meats, canned fruits, canned vegetables, grains, canned milk products, soup and water.

Emergency Food In The Car

Food supplies in your car should be sufficient to last 3 days (minimum).

Keeping Food Safe

Did you know that a flood, fire, national disaster, or the loss of power from high winds, snow, or ice could jeopardize the safety of your food? Knowing how to determine if food is safe and how to keep food safe will help minimize the potential loss of food and reduce the risk of foodborne illness.

Always keep meat, poultry, fish, and eggs refrigerated at or below 40 °F and frozen food at or below 0 °F. This may be difficult when the power is out. Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. The refrigerator will keep food safely cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened.

By having items on hand that don't require refrigeration and can be eaten cold or heated on the outdoor grill you can be ready for an emergency.

Freeze Dried Food Process and Benefits

The most recent method of preserving food is Freeze drying. Its process involves freezing of food, then removing almost all moisture in a vacuum chamber, and sealing of food in an airtight container. Freeze dried foods are for long term emergency food storage. They taste good, preserve their freshness and last a long time. Plus they're light if you need to carry several weeks worth of meals with you and many packages can be stored and is easy to prepare.

It is also relatively contamination-free since the dehydration process makes it virtually impossible for yeast and potentially harmful bacteria to survive. And since the physical structure of the food is not altered during the freeze-drying process, the food retains its color, shape, texture, and flavor when it is prepared for consumption by reintroducing water. This makes it more attractive to consumers than food preserved by some other methods.

One of the major disadvantages of freeze-dried food is its cost. Freeze drying requires equipment with large investment of money, and the process itself is time consuming and labor intensive, which makes freeze dried food very expensive when compared to other methods of food preservation such as canning or freezing.

Food and Water in an Emergency

If an earthquake, hurricane, winter storm, or other disaster strikes your community, you might not have access to food, water, and electricity for days or even weeks. By taking some time now to store emergency food and water supplies, you can provide for your entire family.

As you stock food, take into account your family's unique needs and tastes. Familiar foods are important. They lift morale and give a feeling of security in times of stress. Try to include foods that they will enjoy and that are also high in calories and nutrition. Foods that require no refrigeration, water, special preparation, or cooking are best.

During and after a disaster, it is vital that you maintain your strength. Remember the following: w Eat at least one well-balanced meal each day. w Drink enough liquid to enable your body to function properly (two quarts or a half gallon per day). w Take in enough calories to enable you to do any necessary work. w Include vitamin, mineral, and protein supplements in your stockpile to ensure adequate nutrition.
