Burnt 9MM Luger Cases With S&B Headstamp (Sellier & Bellot)

Pictures and analysis of Sellier & Bellot (S&B) 9MM Luger cases with burn marks on them. Burn marks may be evidence of ammunition over pressure or defect in the gun that shot the ammunition.

I reload 9mm Luger cases and use a variety range pickups (cases). On 2/4/2012 I was separating my range pickup 9mm Luger cases in preparation for cleaning (tumbling) before reloading them. When I emptied the content of one bag of range pickups (one day's worth) I noticed something different. Many of the cases had a "burnt look" to them on one side.

The cases were not dirty but the brass looked tarnished (on one side). The tarnish wouldn't come off with scratching with a fingernail or light scratching with a knife blade. It did come off with metal polish leaving a bright shiny brass case in good condition.

 

Is The Burn Mark On The S&B 9MM Cases From The Gun Or The Sellier & Bellot Ammunition?

I wondered if the burn marks on the S&B cases were from the pistol that shot them or from the ammunition itself. I decided to look at other S&B cases that I picked up on other days which were likely shot by other shooters with different guns. Presumably if those cases showed evidence of burn marks then the gun is not the cause.

I found 79 of these half tarnished S&B brass cases. I looked through other bags of range pickup and I found and examined 14 other S&B brass cases (before cleaning). 12 out of these 14 cases had that same tarnished look.

I searched the internet to see if anyone else noticed this and I found a forum page where members indicate that the S&B 9mm Luger shoots hotter than other ammo and my also use a 124gr bullet instead of a 115gr bullet.

 

Conclusion

The burn marks on the S&B cases that I found were from the Sellier & Bellot ammunition and not from the pistol that shot them.  "It could be that the case material is harder and not expanding from the barrel pressure and allowing hot combustion gas to leak past the case and thus marking it."

Tanner, Could they be +P cases? I don’t recall seeing any excessive burn marks on +P ammo but I have not fired much +P. I don’t think normal loads would be any hotter. It could be that the case material is harder and not expanding from the barrel pressure and allowing hot combustion gas to leak past the case and thus marking it. If this is the case that seems it would decrease the available pressure to accelerate the bullet which is not good. What do you think?  Carl

Carl, None of them had +P markings on them.

Just to make sure they were brass, I touched a magnet to them. None stuck.

What you say makes sense and seems to be the most likely cause. At first I was thinking that someone’s gun (chamber) was messed up when I found them all in one ,but that got ruled out when similar cases were found in other bags.
