Glock 26 Recoil

The Glock 26 is a small, compact and versatile handgun that is perfect for concealed carry purposes. When compared with other 9mm concealed carry handguns, the benefits of the Glock 26 far exceed the disadvantages. The question for me was whether the Glock 26 had too much recoil to shoot well. I am a 55 year old man with average strength but a weakness in my right hand due to nerve damage. I wanted to make sure that the Glock 26 would not be too much for me to handle.

 

What Is Recoil?

Recoil is the amount of "kick" given by a gun when it is fired.

  

RECOIL TEST

To test the recoil of my Glock 26, I went to the shooting range. I brought both my Glock 26 and my Glock 19. I placed targets at a distance of 15 feet and shot both handguns, first two handed, then one handed. I paid particular attention to the recoil each time I fired. When I shot single handed I observed that the recoil was slightly more with the Glock 26 than the Glock 19, but it was hardly noticeable. Shooting with both hands I couldn't feel any difference.

1. While my Glock recoil test was not scientific and solely a matter of my own personal judgment I concluded that the on one recoil on both guns is minimal and that I could easily handle both of them.

2. I found that recoil of the 9mm Glock pistols is not an issue for me. It's not the recoil that gets to me it's the loud noise and the expectation of the recoil. It's just a matter of getting used to it and overcoming fears.

3. I purchased the Glock 26 to carry as a concealed weapon.  Even though , at the present time, I'm not very accurate with the gun at long distances that doesn't matter to me.  I'm told by the instructor at the range that most defensive shootings occur at a distance of 8ft. or less.  At that distance accuracy isn't too much of an issue. 

 

How Can You Reduce The Felt Recoil Of A Gun?

1. Add more weight to the gun. For semiautomatic pistols you can accomplish this by fully loading the magazine with ammunition, replacing factory parts of the gun with heavier aftermarket parts (barrels, sights, magazines) and accessories such as lights and lasers. But be careful with your Glock 26, the more weight you add, the harder it is to conceal carry.

2. Buy Glock 26 magazine extensions.

3. Buy a heavier and larger handgun.

4. Try wearing shooters gloves.

5. Install grips (rubber grip sleeves) to the grips of the gun to provide additional cushion and comfort.
