Cleaning A Glock Pistol

Cleaning a Glock pistol is fast and easy compared to many other handguns. Normal cleaning requires field stripping the pistol into its main component parts (slide, barrel, recoil spring assembly, receiver & magazine). It comes apart in seconds. No special Glock tools are needed.

 

When Should You Clean A Glock?

According to the Glock Manual, a Glock pistol should be field stripped, cleaned and lubricated..

 

1. When it is brand new and before the first time it is fired.

2. At least once a month.

3. After each time it is fired.

4. If the pistol has been dropped, if any malfunctions have occurred or if any defects are suspected.

5. As required (determined by the pistols exposure to the weather and environmental conditions).

 

How Should You Clean A Glock Field Stripped Pistol?

1. THE BARREL - Clean the barrel and the chamber using a bore brush and solvent. Standard firearm solvents can be used on a Glock pistol. Once it is cleaned it should be thoroughly dried using clean patches.

2. THE SLIDE - The slide rail cuts should be cleaned by using a clean patch on the end of a toothbrush type cleaning tool. The breach face (where the firing pin comes out) and the area of the extractor should be held muzzle down and cleaned with a toothbrush type tool. Holding it muzzle down prevents debris from entering the firing pin channel and extractor chamber. This area should not be lubricated after cleaning.

3. THE FRAME - Exposed parts of the frame should be wiped with a clean soft cloth that has been slightly dampened with a quality firearm cleaning solvent. All solvent should wiped dry with a clean dry cloth. Note - Q-tips are helpful in cleaning the frame as long as care is taken not to leave behind any cotton strands.

4. THE MAGAZINE - When necessary, the disassembled Glock magazine can be brushed  out with a dry brush and the magazine spring, follower, insert and floor plate wiped off with a soft clean cloth. If sovent or lubricant are used they must be completely dried prior to reassembly of the part.
