I purchased both the large and the small Homak gun safes for hand gun storage in my home. I found both pistol boxes adequate in design and structure and well suited for the purpose they serve.

The smaller safe HOMAK HS10036683 Electronic Access Pistol Box, 10 X 3.5 X 7.5 Inch has very little room inside for medium to large hand gun storage. Be very careful when selecting this gun safe that your gun will fit inside. Read what other customers have said about the size limitations. This safe does have a slant on the inside which reduces the available inside storage space. I found that the smaller safe will just barely fit a Glock 19 or a J frame revolver. These handguns will fit but require some manipulation to get them in and out of the safe. Do not expect a quick retrieval of your weapon with this pistol box because it will take some maneuvering to get the gun out..

The larger safe HOMAK HS10036684 Electronic Access Pistol Box, 10 X 5.5 X 7.5 Inch has much more room inside for gun storage. If you're going to buy one of these safes I would recommend the larger one. For an additional $10.00, it is well worth it. Positioning Your Gun Inside the Gun Safe

I have found that even with the larger safe the gun has to be positioned inside the safe with some care to allow a quick retrieval. By placing one or two boxes of ammunition on the bottom of the safe, them placing you handgun on top with the handle pointing towards the door positions the gun for quick retrieval.- I have found that even with the larger safe the gun has to be positioned inside the safe with some care to allow a quick retrieval. One Word of Caution - For the smaller safe the Amazon.com picture incorrect. You should go by the measurements instead of the picture. One of the reviewers at amazon.com states "don't buy this safe" and sites two major flaws associated with it. The first is the lack of a mechanical key backup to unlock the safe. The second is exposed wiring and battery pack inside the unit. For the price , i can live with these. If the electronics fail i can always provide the door open with a screwdriver and buy a new safe. As far as the exposed wiring and battery pack go , just being a little careful. You can't just throw the gunman into the safe , you have to place it inside with care..

One of the complaints that reviewers have about the safe is the limited space inside. This is very true with regard to the smaller safe but the larger safe seems adequate for the job. Note - if you intend to open the safe at night or in low light conditions you will need an external illumination source to read the key combination keys. The keys are not back lighted for easy visibility however what can you expect when powered by internal batteries..

 

Mounting and Installing the Pistol Box

The pistol boxes comes with four mounting screws for wall mount installation (see pictures). The backside of the pistol box has four corresponding holes for the screws. To mount, simply open the door, place the safe against the wall at the desired location and screw. The safe is held firmly against the wall. The pistol box does not have to be permanently attached to a wall or service and they be placed in a Drawer or cabinet. This will still protect your guns but Not prevent theft of the entire safe and its contents. In addition to containing a hand gun and ammunition The pistol box is a perfect place to store emergency Cash and small valuables.

Other considerations:

While this pistol box seems adequate for protecting your handgun from children and on authorized users it will not prevent theft or access from a determined individual with the right tools. Keep in mind that the pistol box does not provide instant access. You still have to punch in the code and open the door to retrieve your weapon. That still takes a few seconds to do.  Do not discard the manual that came with your pistol box as it contains the master code and instructions for opening the box in case of battery failure.  The combination code for the pistol box is printed on a sticker placed inside the door. You may wish to remove the sticker to prevent others from seeing your code. The first pistol box that had purchased worked with long flawlessly out of the box. The second one required lubrication of the locking mechanism and door seal before it would work properly. I would suggest that you clean and lubricate these areas before first use.

Recommendation:
Purchase the larger pistol box. It is well worth the Money. Forget about the smaller one. It doesn't have
Enough space inside.

The Good: Inexpensive  -  sturdy construction  -  reliable  -  fast opening

The Bad: The smaller pistol safe is too small and will not hold many hand guns  -  no key override

 

I've spent many hours shopping on the Internet and it Looked that many different gun safes and have found that the Homak pistol box, large size, best suited my purposes. At a cost of $42.00 each you can afford to buy a few of them and place them at different locations inside of your house.
