Too Much Trigger Finger On My Ruger LCP

I recently discovered that if you use too much trigger finger your Ruger LCP will not shoot. Since the Ruger LCP is a very small gun and has such a long trigger pull you must use the correct trigger finger placement in order for it to fire.

Last week when I was at the range I let a couple of friends try out my LCP. I watched closely as they both tried it out. One friend fired a few rounds through it with no problem. My other friend shot it a few times then had a problem. When he squeezed the trigger nothing happened. There was not even a "click". I asked him if he pulled it back all the way and he indicated he did. We both knew the Ruger LCP was famous for it's long trigger pull.

I retrieved the gun from him ejected the round and fired it myself. It worked fine for me. Inspection of the ejected round showed nothing. It was like new. I was a little puzzled. I did remark to myself that when this friend shot I thought he used too much trigger finger. The first joint of his finger was against the trigger instead of the pad of the finger.

This continued to bother me so when I got home and after cleaning my gun I dry fired it with the same amount of trigger finger that my friend used. To my surprise it wouldn't click for me either. I then repositioned my finger to the correct trigger finger position and dry fired it with no problem. I repeated both trigger finger positions a few times more to confirm my suspicion.

I discovered that because the Ruger LCP is such a small gun with such a large trigger pull, too much trigger finger doesn't provide enough travel to activate the trigger. I am sure this may also depend on the size and shape (stubby or slender) of the shooter's hand and fingers. For me the Ruger LCP will definitely not fire when the trigger is placed at my first finger joint. I have to use the middle of my finger pad to pull the trigger.

I searched the internet for other's who have had a similar experience but found none.

I had the same problem and found this solution to help quite well. In fact, I found the LCP shoots better for me if I fire it with my middle finger and use both my left thumb and right index as parallel slide support, resting them both just below the slide and pointing forward. I know this may not be proper shooting form but has worked quite well for me.

Out of curiosity, I just did a dry fire with my LCP using my middle finger to pull the trigger.

I don't know if it is my hand/finger problems (from minor nerve damage) or the size of my hand but my middle finger couldn't pull the trigger with my index finger pointing forward. I couldn't bend enough.

My wife had the same problem, said the gun would not fire... I wondered why she kept pointing the lasr for so long. I tried and fired it easily. I am really glad I found this post so she can try a different finger position .. nice little gun actually.
