SMITH & WESSON 22A EXTRACTOR

The Extractor is one out of three parts that make up the Extractor Assembly. It is the hooked flat metal piece that grabs the rim of a spent case and pulls it from the chamber of the gun. Spring tension for the Extractor is provided by the Plunger and Spring. Familiarize yourself with the photographs of the component parts, their orientation and function. The extractor is held and locked into place by the Plunger and Spring. Spring tension must be relieved in order to remove the Extractor.

 

SMITH & WESSON 22A EXTRACTOR REMOVAL

 

Step 1: Remove the Firing Pin Housing per procedure Smith & Wesson 22a Firing Pin Removal, Cleaning & Reassembly.	Step 2: Locate the S&W 22A Extractor on side of slide	Extractor "claw" shown on the face of slide.
Another view.	Step 3: Push down on top of extractor (to make a little gap) and insert pin between the extractor and plunger as shown.	Another view.
This is the hole in the slide from which to push out the extractor.	Step 4: Pull down on pin to compress the spring (the pin will probably bend).	Step 5: Use a block of wood to brace the slide when pulling down on the pin, then push out the extractor.
Extractor removed. Be careful when removing the pin or the plunger and spring may fly out.	Empty extractor channel in the slide.

		REMOVAL COMPLETE Clean all parts. Clean the channel. Do not oil the parts.

SMITH & WESSON 22A EXTRACTOR INSTALLATION

Step 1: Insert Spring into extractor plunger channel.	Step 2: Install Plunger.	Step 3: Position the plunger such that the notched side faces inboard.
Orientation of the extractor relative to the slide.	Step 4:  Push Spring and Plunger all the way back into the channel.	Completed installation.

Compress the Extractor Spring and plunger as far back as possible and install extractor with hooked face inboard. It should slip right in and lock into place when spring tension is released. I used my fingers and just the extractor itself to push and compress the plunger/spring back as far as it could go. The Extractor snapped into place and locked itself into position.
