What Is a Rimfire Cartridge? (Ammunition)

A rimfire cartridge is a metal ammunition cartridge which employs the explosive priming mixture in the rim of the cartridge. This differs from a center fire cartridge which uses a centrally located primer at the base of the cartridge. Centerfire cartridges can be reloaded, while rimfire cartridges cannot.

In the pictures note that the firing pin indent is centered  for the .380 ACP centerfire casing and on the edge or rim of the 22LR rimfire casing.
