What Is A Rimless Cartridge?
The term rimless cartridge is a misnomer. Rimless
cartridges have a rim but it doesn't protrude out as far as
cartridges. The rim has the same diameter as that of the
case body. An undercut is provided on the case adjacent to the
rim to provide a feature and surface for the extractor to grip.
Note the difference in the rim diameters of the 9mm and 38
special cases shown in the pictures. The rim of the 9mm Luger
case is about the same diameter as the case body while the body
and rim diameters of the 38 special are notably different.
